City Books is proud to participate in the artistic legacy of Pittsburgh’s North Side; Col. James Anderson, Gertrude Stein, and Mary Roberts Rinehart are still revered names in the Old Allegheny Historic District and their homes, now privately owned, are within a short distance of our location.
In honor of that tradition, City Books has developed the City Books Experience, a 90-min guided introduction to the legacy of arts & letters in Pittsburgh and the North Side in particular. The walk focuses on the birthplaces and early lives of Mary Cassatt, Robinson Jeffers, Stephen Foster, Andrew Carnegie, Willa Cather, Martha Graham, Gertrude Stein, and Mary Roberts Rinehart.
Upon returning to the bookstore, guests enjoy a white-glove exploration of the antique books in our inventory. They handle manuscripts and learn book-collecting jargon as well as the important features booksellers consider when pricing antique, collectible, and used texts.
The tour is offered on select weekends throughout the year. Light snacks and beverages are provided.
