Join City Books for Independent Bookstore Day 2018 on Saturday, April 28 from 11-5.
We will be offering special titles for the day, including new copies of Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time and Patricia Bell-Scott’s The Firebrand and the First Lady: Portrait of a Friendship–Pauli Murray, Eleanor Roosevelt, and the Struggle for Social Justice, as well as new books by local & regional authors, including Doug Rice’s Here Lies Memory and Todd Snyder’s 12 Rounds in Lo’s Gym: Boxing and Manhood in Appalachia.
By popular request, Independent Bookstore Day will mark the introduction of the first City Books merchandise–a sturdy canvas tote bag manufactured by our Northside neighbors 3E Studios. The natural-colored bag features a bookplate design on both sides with black handles to avoid discoloration from dirty hands. Regularly $12, bags will be on sale for Indie Bookstore Day for only $10.
From 11 AM-2 PM, Jessica Schaefer from The Bird + the Beard will be in the store to display her line of custom literary wedding invitations and geeky greeting cards. You will recognize her cards from their distinctive design based on the Periodic Table of the Elements; some are already in the store. Among other things, Jessica will be spotlighting her stationery sets, gift card holders, and book marks.
From 12-2 PM, Matt Holbein from The Foliage Library will be here signing 24 Hour Flowers. If you missed our Facebook live event, see the book in person on April 28. 24 Hour Flowers is not only a work of art, but it also functions as an educational tool to learn how plants are arranged into families. Open the book & find a garden amongst clock gears, and 8 blooms “growing” from the center of the book. You need to see it to believe it. A perfect gift for Mother’s Day.
From 2-4 PM, City Books will once again host Ann Gilligan from Gilligan’s Handcrafted Sorbet. Gilligan’s sorbet is made in small batches, using nothing but fresh, seasonal ingredients, water & sugar. Their flavors are packed with baskets of juicy fruit & touches of the uncommon, from red wine & rosemary to Darjeeling tea and spiced rum — creating a treat that’s refreshing and a bit unexpected. Delicious in hot OR cold weather!
As an added treat at 7 PM, City Books will host Winter Tales, an evening of one–act, 10-minute plays drawn from original scripts written by six emerging & established playwrights. The event will be fast-moving & diverse entertainment from fresh voices. Due to the mature nature of some material, the event is not recommended for people under age 14.
Come in to browse, say hello, or buy a book. Regardless, celebrate the power of community book selling on Independent Bookstore Day with City Books!
