Since 1984, City Books has been a home for creativity, discussion, and literature in Pittsburgh. The bookshop features great lighting, a gender-neutral bathroom, free Wi-Fi, and soft jazz. Despite the ongoing pandemic, City Books continues to provide vital resources to the greater Pittsburgh community. Masks are required without exception.

Experience
Arlan Hess, City Books owner (Photo by Tereneh Idia)

Arlan Hess is the owner of City Books where she directs the City Books Writer-in-Residence program for emerging & marginalized writers. A purpose-driven entrepreneur, she serves on the board of Write Pittsburgh and is a member of the founding council of The Cohort, a Pittsburgh-based creator community bringing together influencers and business owners.

Second-hand books are wild books, homeless books; they have come together in vast flocks of variegated feather, and have a charm which the domesticated volumes of the library lack.
